Cleaning Your Bean Bag

  • Before attempting any cleaning method, always spot test in an inconspicuous place like on the bottom of the bean bag to make sure that your cloth or sponge is colour-fast, often coloured sponges and new cleaning cloths will release their dye when new. Also, carefully check that the soap you are using does not affect fabric or colour of material.
Note: most dishwashing detergents do have a dye in them which will stain the fabric. If detergent is necessary to move fats or oils, then use an environmentally safe one that does not contain dye.

  • For spills or other food stains:
Wash immediately with a damp cloth moistened (not soaking) with mild soapy water.
If stain is still visible, let dry and repeat process until stain is removed.
Pat dry with a clean towel.

  • A citric based goo remover is good for problems like chewing gum and some wax-based products but we cannot guarantee that the acid will not affect the dye in the fabric, so please SPOT TEST underneath the bean bag first! After applying the goo remover, wash out with mild soapy water, then rinse with damp cloth using only plain water. Press and pat dry with a colour-fast towel and allow to dry in the shade.

  • If your bag is made from polyester, stretch or mesh fabric, you can empty the bag and put it in a washing machine, but make sure it is on gentle cycle, using cold water and drip dry only. Don't put it in with other items! Make sure any stray beans are removed from the water's surface before the machine drains the water to avoid causing a blockage in the machine.

NEVER USE A TUMBLE DRYER, NEAR FIREPLACE OR CLOSE TO HEATER TO DRY YOUR BEAN BAG - ALWAYS AIR DRY IN A SHADED AREA !

Special cleaning instructions for artificial leather (aka faux leather/vegan leather)
and natural leather:

Apply a little warm soapy water using a clean, damp dye-fast cloth. Avoid putting too much pressure or circular motions on the one spot, but instead gently wipe in one direction and then across the other way. Rinse out cloth and wipe again. Pat dry with a clean towel, and leave to air. To prevent damage from UV rays, don't hang outside in direct sun.

Currently, we do not stock products made with natural leather, but here are a few tips for looking after a leather bean bag. Natural leather products should always be treated with a leather sealant and conditioner. They are usually treated and sealed when manufactured but like any leather product, it is a good idea to manually apply treatment initially and then on a regular basis. For this reason, we don't normally stock leather bean bags due to the high maintenance and high price to purchase.

In summary:
  • Always spot test underneath first!
  • Do not use solvent based or abrasive cleaners!
  • Try cleaning first with a damp cloth before using chemicals, including soap or detergent.
  • Use a mild soap or detergent if necessary.
  • Dry with a clean colour-fast towel by pressing and patting over damp area.
  • Never use a cloths dryer, fireplace or electric heater to dry your bean bag!
  • Most drycleaners will not do bean bags, especially if the beans are not separate in an internal liner bag.
