Bean Bag Filling
Next page: Filling Instructions
What do I fill the bean bags with?Bean bags are typically filled with a large volume of light-weight foam balls called expanded polystyrene beans (EPS.) This is because of the relatively low price, weight, softness and resistance to crushing of EPS beans compared to other foam products. The unique qualities of EPS beans are what give a bean bag its comfortable and adjustable characteristics. Yes, as you will find on the internet, some people have tried seeds, dried beans, corn or even packed the bean bag with leaves, but these are usually too hard to be comfortable, too heavy for the fabric of the bag to contain, or just plain unhealthy when it comes to using something that decomposes and attracts mould. So, only use EPS beans - we do and most all bean bag suppliers do.
EPS bean filling that is made and sold in Australia has a fire retardant additive so that the beans are non-flammable. The beans are non-toxic but can present a choking hazard to small children or animals if inhaled or swallowed. This is why regulations in Australia require that child-proof measures like lockable zips be used in the manufacture of bean bags. |
Does Bean Bags Australia sell the bean filling? No, sorry, we don't. The reason why is that it is too expensive to ship polystyrene beans in the cubic volume required to fill a bean bag. It's true that the beans weigh basically nothing, but their cubic volume is used when calculating freight. Because of this, bean filling is freighted in bulk amounts around Australia by road to the stores that stock it.
We recommend either having your bean bags filled at your closest bean bag shop, or obtaining EPS beans which are commonly sold in 100 litre (500 gm) bags from most large retail chains who sell them around Australia. Bean filling is usually sold all around Australia from these stores: K-Mart, Big W and Target. Some of the larger stores also offer a delivery service to your home. TIP: Make sure to allow for room in your vehicle when you go to pick up your bean filling! |
Recommended filling volumes

The filling volumes on the right are suggestions only, being based on how we typically fill them for the display room. The actual amount you may need will differ slightly, depending on how hard or soft you want the seat to be. If you have any beans left over, try store them somewhere safe in case you wish to do a top up later. Bean bags often settle a bit on the first fill as the beans slightly crush down. Usually, not more than 50 litres of top-up bean filling is required to bring your bean bag back to feeling like new.
